A message from the PresidentHere we are already in fall of 2021. The year has gone by quickly with lots of activity at the shelter despite ongoing COVID-19 restrictions. Our staff and volunteers have done an excellent job of meeting safety and health requirements while caring for our animals, and so far this year have found loving homes for 62 cats and 29 dogs (including several litters of puppies and kittens).
We are very fortunate to be able to continue our working relationship with Grey Bruce Pet Hospital, Thornbury Veterinary Hospital and Georgian Triangle Humane Society during the pandemic. These relationships help us to honour our commitment to have animals spayed / neutered and vaccinated before being adopted. A huge thank you to everyone for their help during these challenging times!
We’ve had a number of generous donations from individuals, bequests and corporate partners this year. We are truly grateful for their help, especially during this second year of the COVID-19 pandemic when we still could not do our major fundraisers. All of this, plus the revenue from our Cat’s Meow shop on Boucher Street in Meaford, has kept us going strong.
On behalf of the animals, thank you for your continued support of the Grey Bruce Animal Shelter!
Richard Banks,
Board President

As a registered charity, we have an elected Board of Directors, committee heads and a general membership.
You can further support the Grey-Bruce Animal Shelter's goal to provide quality care to animals and service to residents by becoming a member. Membership costs $20 per year and gives voting rights to anyone 18 years or older.
All members then have the opportunity to provide insight and experience into the running of the Corporation by becoming a Board Member and the head of a committee. Our annual general meeting is held in the spring.

On June 19, we held our annual garage sale in Meaford. There was a great turnout and it raised over $3000 for the shelter!
On August 7, GBAS had a booth at the Tails of the Mountain Festival in Georgian Bluffs. The outdoor event had high attendance and was a great opportunity to get some more exposure for the shelter.
It's been an exciting summer for our cats, too! Our outdoor catios were completed and have been enjoyed all summer. Inside, an elaborate cat wall was completed in one of the large rooms. Thank you to Cindi and Jeff for the donation in memory of their cat Levi that made this project possible, and to the Wasaga Woodworking Club for the design and construction!Featured Pets
This year we became home to a young Husky-Shepherd X with the unfortunate name of Fuggin. He was under 1 year, and was blind since birth. He was nervous of new people or new surroundings but quickly gained confidence. He came to us, semi house-trained, unable to get in a car or climb stairs and with no real leash training. He was fostered out where he could learn to be a dog in the presence of another dog with an easy-going nature. Fuggin thrived and learned so much in a short time. He was a real sweet-heart who didn't know he was blind and played like any other dog. He particularly loved playing in the water!
Fuggin eventually found a loving home with people who understood that while he was blind, he was still a smart, high energy dog. He has long walks and plays on the waterfront and with a neighbourhood of furry friends. A great story for a really special guy.
He even gained some notoriety overseas when a neighbour shared his story with a daughter teaching English overseas. She shared with her class and they all became very interested in the lively blind dog. His joie de vivre is something we can all aspire to.
This year we said good bye to one of our longest term residents.
Portia (aka "the queen", Miss P.) came to us as a young, feral cat over 12 years ago. She became more receptive to handling over the years but was never adoptable as she was quite cranky and was very scared in unfamiliar surroundings. She lived out her life in the shelter, swatting at volunteers who got too close to "her majesty's throne" and gracing only particular volunteers with the honour of grooming her.
As she aged and her health declined, a loving volunteer took her into her home and her heart to provide palliative care until the end. Portia in her final days became quite loving and affectionate but always retained that little spark of feistiness. RIP sweet girl.
Thank you to everyone who donated their empties! We are over $300 and counting! Even though August is over, the cans & bottles keep rolling in so we've decided to continue collecting. You can place your empties in the bins provided at our gates or give us a call for large donations! Our furry friends appreciate it!
